András Schiff and Dimitri Kitaenko 1974 at the Tchaikovsky Competition
Russian label Melodiya is releasing up to now never published live recordings of the young András Schiff from the Fifth International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Besides solo works by Rachmaninov, Liszt, Shostakovich, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev, András Schiff plays both First Piano Concertos by Piotr Tchaikovsky and Johannes Brahms with the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Dimitri Kitaenko.
In 1974, 21-year-old András Schiff was one of the finalists of the Tchaikovsky Competition and was awarded Fourth Prize behind artists like Myung-Whun Chung and Andrei Gavrilov. But in spite of his defeat with the jury,Schiff had won the hearts of the audience. The participation in this competition launched his successful career.
