With James Ehnes in Copenhagen
During the nineties, Dimitri Kitaenko was First Guest Conductor of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Copenhagen. Since then he returns regularly to this orchestra, and does so on April 21 for a concert with the Canadian violinist James Ehnes, who is the soloist in Dmitri Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto.
Two other works are on the program, the suite from Igor Stravinsky's Firebird and the First Symphony, Winter Dreams, by Piotr Tchaikovsky. About Kitaenko's recording for Oehms Classics, one could read in the music magazine Pizzicato: "It's common knowledge that Tchaikovsky's far too seldom played First Symphony is no youthful folly. Maybe, if other conductors would play it with less effects and so authentically like Dimitri Kitaenko, it would perhaps better be known. Kitaenko invests a lot in the work to optimally show its deeply Russian character, its melancholy, and its colours. He is supported by a very committed Gürzenich orchestra, so that the Russian mystery is completely expressed in this music."
