Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5: “CD of the Day” on Ö1
The most recent CD release in Dmitri Kitaenko and the Gürzenich Orchestra's Tchaikovsky cycle, the Fifth Symphony, was chosen as “CD of the Day” by Ö1 in the Austrian radio programme “Ö1 bis zwei” on 17 February. “It is not just the first rank world-famous orchestras who are allowed and able to perform the most well known symphonies in an exemplary fashion. The example I give time and time again is the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra's cycle of the Mahler Symphonies under Jonathan Nott. The Cologne Gürzenich Orchestra's Tchaikovsky volume could become a second such example. (…) Dmitri Kitaenko has furnished the Cologne Gürzenich Orchestra with a very intense and highly dynamic interpretation of the Fifth Symphony. At the helm of the Cologne Gürzenich Orchestra, Dmitri Kitaenko has afforded the work a tension between a wistful longing and a need for redemption on the one hand, and on the other an almost crushing seriousness. One cannot escape the emotional weight of the music in this version, and I can warmly recommend this to anyone who is yet to add this composition to their disc collection”, commented music editor Gustav Danzinger explaining his choice.
