Dimitri Kitaenko conducted a 'terrific' New Year's concert in Cologne
Brilliant sounds were expected, when on Sunday, 4th of January, Dimitri Kitaenko raised the baton for the New Year's Day Concert of the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne's Philharmonic Hall. The reactions of audience and critic were enthusiastic. The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger saw a "communitiy of common destiny" between the orchestra and its conductor laureate (full text here). Sergey Krylov was the soloist in Mendelssohn's sound-blossoming violin concerto, a work, which is musically quite close to Sergei Prokofiev's First Symphony, the so called Classical. The program was concluded by a true classical piece, the second act from Piotr Tchaikovsky's ballet 'Nutcracker', created at the Mariinsky Theater in 1892. The Kölner Stadtanzeiger's critic called the performance "terrific".
